Snowman/Snow Symbolism

Since Maycomb is in the south, it rarely ever snows. So when Scout looks out her window, she gets scared. Attics then explains to her what snow is. She then gets excited and wants to build a snowman. There was barely any snow, so the snowman was mixed in with the mud that was under the snow. The snowman and snow symbolize that any dirty secrets can not stay hidden. Since it only snowed a bit, the snowman is not made entirely of snow, it is also merged in with mud. Symbolizing the secrets, the mud can not be completely covered up with the prettiness of the blanket of snow. No matter how beautiful the snow looks at the top, there is mud underneath and the mud will eventually find its way to the top. This represents how the townspeople can be seen as nice and respectful, but their thoughts are dirty and racial.
