Courage

True bravery is standing up for what is right no matter the cost.

True bravery is fighting a fight that is already lost.

True bravery is choosing not to fight back when confronted with criticism and antagonism.

LITTLE CHUCK LITTLE

Standing up for Miss Caroline, Little Chuck Little confidently faces Burris Ewell despite being only about half his size. Threatening Burris, Little Chuck Little tells him to “go home” or he will “kill” him. Despite the age and size however, Little Chuck Little stand tall and tells a teacher not to “fret”. Reassuring Miss Caroline, he tells her “there ain’t no need to fear a cootie.” Regardless of the fact he is in first year and is very miniature, Little Chuck Little doesn’t fail to show his courage.

ATTICUS DEFENDED TOM ROBINSON

Defending Tom Robinson, Atticus does not refuse his case knowing if he did, he wouldn’t be able to live with himself. Knowing it’s the right thing to do despite the turmoil present in Maycomb. Fully aware of the consequences, Atticus does not give up on the case up until Tom Robinson’s death. Believing in equality for all men, Atticus doesn’t differentiate between a black man and a white man. Regardless of Tom Robinson’s colour, Atticus defends him since he believes in equality, no matter what colour the person may be. Setting a good example for the children, Atticus explains to them there is no difference between a black man and a white man, the only contrast is in colour. Describing to Scout how she should “fight with her head” for a change and keep her fists “down,” Atticus explains her the importance of straying away from violence.

MISS DUBOSE

Despite being morphine addict, Miss Dubose overcame this by dying freely as “mountain air.” Miss Dubose endured suffering to die free. She didn’t want anything holding her back therefore she stopped taking drugs, tolerated the pain without the morphine thereby finishing her last wish. Knowing she was going to die anyway, Miss Dubose shows her strength and courageousness. Explaining to Jem and Scout the definition of real courage, Atticus says, “when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.”
