Accepting Tom Robinson's case, not only Atticus but Scout and Jem also recieve hate from their neighborhood. Scout is subjected to Cecil Jacob's and Maycomb Couty's harsh criticims towards her father regarding Atticus's actions of accepting Tom Robinson's case.

Shortly after Miss Dubose passes away; Atticus explains Jem what real courage is. Miss dubose is an example of courage, which Jem never understood. Thinking its about holding a gun, Atticus makes him realize what Miss Dubose survived through, was real courage.

Escapring from jail, Tom Robinson gets shot 17 times. Even though he did nothing wrong he was forced to live there. When he tried running away, he got shot and died.

Lacking knowledge about Boo Radley, Jem and Scout judge him based on misconceptions. They are blinded by the towns hatred for Boo Radley and later on mature. Towards the ending they realize Boo Radley is nothing like they thought.

On a snowy night, Miss Maudie's house burns down. All of her belongings need to come out and everyone is able to see them. Just like Miss Maudie's belongings, Maycomb's secrets will soon start coming out which once were kept secretly behind closed doors.

Knowing the hate he will recieve, Atticus defends Tom Robinson. When Taylor asks him if he's willing to take the case he knows he needs to do this. He realizes he will not have the courage to look his children in the eye if he does not take on the case. Standing to his beliefs, Atticus defends Tom Robinson despite Maycomb's cruelty.

During a windy night, Jem and Scout are attacked by Bob Ewell. Jem trying to help Scout from getting killed falls and is hit. Within a few seconds Boo Radley comes and kills Bob Ewell, saving both Jem and Scout.
